Raising the bar in community living: A Colombian residential complex's award-winning makeover
Arboretto Residential Complex is a lively community dedicated to the safety and convenience of its residents. Following an increase in traffic from visitors and vehicles, it decided to enhance its security infrastructure. Collaborating with Vision2Cloud and Hikvision, Arboretto successfully streamlined access while improving safety and operational efficiency for a better living environment. This effort was recognized with Vision2Cloud winning a Latin American Security Association (ALAS) award in 2023.
In Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia, the Arboretto Residential Complex is a very busy and bustling community of 153 households. Every day, over 500 people, including approximately 400 vehicles, enter and leave the premises.
However, the manual system for managing visitors was labor-intensive and prone to errors. Security personnel were overwhelmed as they tried to grapple with the sheer volume of entries and exits. The inefficiencies of this system not only led to delays and inaccuracies but also heightened security concerns. Arboretto decided it needed a transformative solution which would elevate its security infrastructure and operational efficiency.
To build a secure and efficient environment, Arboretto partnered with the system integrator Vision2Cloud to update their security system using Hikvision's access control technology.
The transformation began with integrating Pro Face Access Terminals (DS-K5671-ZU and DS-K1T671MF) with Tripod Turnstiles (DS-K3G501-R/M-Dm55) for pedestrian entry. These devices provide quick, reliable access by verifying residents' identities in just 0.2 seconds using facial recognition, barcodes, QR codes, and access cards. Boasting over 99% accuracy, the facial recognition technology, combined with infrared lens verification, eliminates identity fraud risks. The turnstiles also integrate with fire alarm systems for automatic barrier drop during emergencies, ensuring safe evacuation.
For vehicular access, a two-step verification system was introduced. Vehicles pass through a dual-barrier system monitored by 4MP ANPR Intelligent Entrance Cameras (DS-TCG405-E) and 5 Series Straight-Arm DC Frequency-Conversion Barrier Gates (DS-TMG510-H). This system uses license plate recognition and secondary driver authentication to enhance security and facilitate the seamless passage of multiple vehicles. The utilization of DC frequency conversion technology in the barrier gates guarantees accurate, smooth, and low-noise operation, contributing to more efficient and user-friendly access control. A Video Intercom Kit (DS-KIS602(B)) which includes an indoor station integrated with a third-party ID card reader were also installed at the gate, enabling visitor communication and verification. Once approved, visitors enter their details, which are automatically recorded by the system.
To streamline entry during high-traffic events, residents can pre-register their guests. Each pre-registered visitor will receive a unique QR code via email, which they can scan at the entrance for fast access. This convenient pre-registration system enhances security and ensures a smooth––and rapid––entry process for all attendees during special events.
Moreover, to enhance the overall security of the complex, various security cameras were deployed at the entrances. These included 4 MP Varifocal Dome Network Cameras (DS-2CD1743G0-I(Z)), 2 MP Outdoor WDR Fixed Dome Network Cameras (DS-2CD2123G0-I(S)), and 2 MP ColorVu Fixed Bullet Network Cameras (DS-2CD1027G0-L). Together, these cameras provide comprehensive coverage 24/7, enabling proactive oversight and incident response.
All these systems are centrally managed through Hikvision's HikCentral Professional platform, which integrates access control, visitor management, and CCTV systems for real-time monitoring and visitor data analysis. This comprehensive platform allows Arboretto to efficiently manage and monitor the security of residents, staff, and visitors.
The implementation of Hikvision's access control, video intercom, and video monitoring solutions led to considerable improvements in both security and operational efficiency at Arboretto. Automated verification drastically reduced human errors and ensured only authorized individuals and vehicles could enter the complex, significantly boosting security.
Operational expenses decreased due to the reduction in manual labor, translating into notable cost savings and better resource allocation. The centralized management platform also provided valuable insights into visitor patterns, which administrators have since used to optimize security protocols and operational strategies.
Residents, meanwhile, have experienced greater satisfaction from the increased convenience and security provided by the new system. The automated processes have streamlined entry and exit procedures, reduced wait times and errors, making life in Arboretto more pleasant and secure.
The success of this project was acknowledged when Vision2Cloud won second place in the private category of the 2023 Latin American Security Association (ALAS) award. "By addressing key challenges with a tailored Hikvision solution, we not only enhanced the complex's security but also significantly improved the living experience for residents," said Laura Camargo, Arboretto's administrator. "This project highlights the transformative impact of advanced security and access control systems in residential communities and underscores their essential role in modern urban living."
