German food wholesaler brewing smarter facility protection with Hikvision alarm system
Food service provider VLG adopted the Hikvision AX Hybrid PRO system to transform security at their 10,000 m² facility. Featuring advanced detectors and the Hik-Connect app, this solution not only streamlined management but also ensured uninterrupted operations, providing enhanced safety and scalability for future growth.
VLG Großverbraucherdienst Südwest GmbH is a respected food wholesaler with a rich 160-year history. Operating from a large 10,000 m² facility in Saarbrücken, the company supports customers across southwest Germany, Luxembourg, and eastern France. However, its secluded industrial location makes it particularly vulnerable to break-ins during evenings, weekends and holidays. With a surge in burglaries in the area, the company was naturally deeply concerned about improving the securing at such a vast site.
With multiple truck docks and entry points, however, this was not a straightforward challenge. Moreover, their technical setup was decentralized, which further complicated the integration of modern security systems.
VLG needed a solution that would provide controlled access and automation for arming and disarming their security system. Although a few security cameras would help secure the perimeter, a more comprehensive alarm system was needed to cover the expansive area.
VLG partnered with the local security expert Matec Sicherheitstechnik to implement a Hikvision AX Hybrid PRO alarm system. This innovative system uses both wired and wireless technologies to secure about 8,000 m² of critical storage space. The heart of the system is the AX Pro Hub (DS-PA601-96B), which supports various detectors and devices for comprehensive protection. VLG installed 20 Wired Passive Infrared (PIR) Detectors (DS-PDP18-EG2(P)) and 24 Wireless PIR Detectors (DS-PDP15P-EG2-WE) at key access points. These detectors monitor human motion during non-operational hours to provide timely warnings of potential intrusions.
To further protect their valuable inventories, 12 PIRCAM detectors (DS-PD501PC12) were installed. These detectors combine infrared technology with smart cameras to capture real-time images of any detected movement. This setup enhances real-time visibility while reducing false alarms. To protect against environmental risks, VLG also added Wireless Temperature Detectors in fridge areas (DS-PDTPH-E-WE), and Water Leak Detectors (DS-PDWL-E-WE) in electrical zones to detect risks early and prevent potential damage.
Tri-X Wireless Receivers (DS-PR501-HWE) were positioned around the site to ensure strong signal coverage, preventing signal weakening or blocking by walls. Enabled by Hikvision’s Speed-X technology, these devices provide faster, more reliable, and longer-distance transmission of video feeds and alarms. They also enable HD images from wired PIRCAMs to be verified within just 3 seconds.
The Hik-Connect app allows VLG seamless control and management of the security system, offering instant notifications for quick response. Alternatively, it would have been possible for Matec, the installer, to manage the system remotely via Hik-Partner Pro on behalf of VLG.
Benefits: enhanced safety, scalability, and peace of mind
Implementing the AX Hybrid PRO alarm system has greatly increased VLG's overall security. The Hikvision app has streamlined device management, offering centralized control over live monitoring, user permissions, playback, and alarm alerts, ensuring 24/7 safety. This allows the security team to quickly verify potential threats before notifying the authorities.
Furthermore, the system has reduced the need for time-consuming manual alarm checks. Even when staff are not on-site, the Hik-Connect app ensures uninterrupted operation, providing visual confirmation and peace of mind before taking any further actions. This has not only lightened the workload but also allowed VLG to reallocate resources to other critical areas.
The hybrid system’s seamless integration with VLG’s existing infrastructure has avoided costly changes and makes it easy to add new devices as, and when, they are needed. As the business expands or security needs evolve, this scalability means that VLG can effortlessly extend the system to accommodate new requirements.
“The comprehensive alarm system has significantly improved our physical security, operational efficiency, and client service excellence,” said Jochen Viehoff, Logistics Manager at VLG. “It enables us to deliver faster, more reliable service to clients, ensuring they continue to receive top-tier service while our premises remain resolutely secure.”
This project highlights the transformative impact of advanced security and access control systems in residential communities and underscores their essential role in modern urban living.
